Regional information

The Census 96 Community Leaflets provide a brief overview of the population characteristics of your area, and are freely available. Summary Statistical Profiles based on 1998 electoral boundaries are also available free of charge and give an overview of the population characteristics for each electorate.

See Standard Regional Tables (Census 96) for a comprehensive range of regional tables down to area unit level. They include a set of 30 tables covering personal and household characteristics, from ethnicity to occupation and housing. Each table contains data for all area units within a selected territorial authority (city or district council) or regional council area.

A range of pre-printed maps showing the regional boundaries used in the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings is also available.

Census reports

The following reports from the 1996 Census are available in printed or electronic format.

  • An Introduction to the Census - mainly a source for users of 1996 Census data, but also covers the history of census-taking in New Zealand and contains census forms back to 1916.
  • Education - includes census results on qualifications and study against demographics, income and employment.
  • Electoral Profile (1995 Boundaries) - encompasses demographic and economic characteristics of electoral districts.
  • Electoral Profile (1998 Boundaries) - encompasses demographic and economic characteristics of electoral districts.
  • Electoral Profile (1998 MMP Boundaries) - encompasses demographic and economic characteristics of MMP electoral districts.
  • Employment and Unemployment - covers employment status, total hours worked, industry, occupation, qualification and means of travelling to work.
  • Ethnic Groups - covers demographic, social and economic characteristics of a range of ethnic groups. It also includes education, income and employment information.
  • Families and Households - includes extended family, household and economic characteristics.
  • Housing - includes nature of occupancy and dwelling characteristics.
  • Incomes - includes personal, family and household incomes and income support.
  • Iwi - covers demographic, social and economic characteristics of iwi.
  • Māori - covers a wide variety of demographic, social and economic characteristics of Māori, including education, income, employment and household composition.
  • Pacific Islands People - covers demographic, social and economic characteristics of the Cook Islands, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tongan, and Tokelauan ethnic groups.
  • People Born Overseas - a comprehensive collection of statistics outlining the demographics and household composition of New Zealand's immigrant population.
  • Population and Dwellings Statistics - covers final counts of population and dwellings in regions, territorial authorities, area units, and urban and rural areas.
  • Population Structure and Internal Migration - a comprehensive collection of age, marital status and migration tables is included.
  • National Summary - covers a wide variety of demographic, social and economic population characteristics, including ethnic group, income, occupation and household composition.
  • Regional Summary - includes area totals for population demographics, income, employment and household characteristics.
  • Unpaid Work - provides information on unpaid work outside the household by such variables as age, ethnicity, sex and labour force status.
  • A Report on the 1996 Post-enumeration Survey - this survey was conducted in connection with 1996 Census. Its aim was to find out how many people were not counted in the census or were counted more than once.

Analytical reports

The New Zealand Now series is a set of books which introduces and discusses a diverse range of topical New Zealand subjects. Each book draws together results from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, and from other sources, to build a picture of New Zealand as it was in the late 1990s.

Pacific Islands Profiles is a set of books based on the 1996 Census that profiles the six largest Pacific Islands communities in New Zealand.

Information from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings
