1996 Census classification counts (1996 Census of Population and Dwellings)

This section contains rounded basic counts by categories for variables for the population usually resident in New Zealand. It does not include overseas visitors. It is important to check the variable metadata for quality issues and definitions.

People

These tables provide counts for variables about people, including:

  • age
  • date of birth
  • sex
  • birthplace
  • years since arrival in New Zealand
  • ethnicity
  • Māori ancestry
  • iwi
  • language spoken
  • religion
  • educational qualifications
  • family
  • marital status
  • number of children born
  • living arrangments
  • cigarette smoking behaviour
  • disability
  • unpaid work
  • labour force status
  • work and workplace
  • income
  • usual residence.

Occupation

These tables use the five-digit level NewZealand Standard Classification of Occupations 1995 NZSCO95) in counts for variables about occupations.

General population

These tables provide counts for variables about general population, including:

  • total population
  • ususally resident population
  • overseas visitor population
  • New Zealand-born population
  • overseas-born populaiton
  • occupied dwliings
  • families and households
  • labour force
  • income support payments
  • sources of income
  • ethnicity.

Families

These tables provide counts for family variables, including:

  • family type
  • number of people in family
  • age of youngest child
  • age of oldest child
  • total family income
  • sources of family income.

Extended families

These tables provide counts for extended family variables, including:

  • extended family type
  • number of people in extended family
  • total income for extended family
  • sources of income for extended family
  • number of sources of income for extended family.

Economic families

These tables provide counts for economic family variables, including:

  • number of people in economic family
  • total income for economic family
  • sources of income for economic family
  • number of sources of income for economic family.

Dwellings

These tables provide rounded basic counts by category for dwelling variables for private and (where appropriate) non-private dwellings.

The count of people is for usual occupants (ie people at home on census night or absentees). Exceptions: dwelling indicator and dwelling type data is provided for both usual occupants and census night occupants.

Dwelling variables include:

  • dwelling type
  • usual household composition
  • tenure
  • occupancy
  • number of rooms
  • weekly rent (rented dwellings)
  • total household income
  • sources of household income
  • number of sources of household income
  • access to telephones, motor vehicles
  • fuels used by household.
