Motor vehicles
- Fijian people experienced an improvement in motor vehicle access in the decade from 1991. In 2001, 89 percent of Fijians lived in households with access to a motor vehicle – up from 86 percent in 1996 and 84 percent in 1991. The comparable proportions for the Pacific and New Zealand populations in 2001 were 86 percent and 93 percent respectively.
- The New Zealand-born and overseas-born Fijian populations in New Zealand were equally as likely to have household motor vehicle access in 2001 (both 89 percent).
Telecommunications
- In 2001, 94 percent of Fijian people lived in households with access to a telephone – a higher level than among the Pacific population in New Zealand (87 percent). Among the New Zealand population, household telephone access was 95 percent.
- Thirty-eight percent of Fijian people lived in households with access to the Internet in 2001 – nearly twice the proportion of the Pacific population (20 percent). The equivalent proportion among the New Zealand population was 43 percent.
- Levels of household access to telecommunications were similar for the overseas-born and New Zealand-born Fijian populations. In 2001, overseas-born Fijians were slightly more likely than Fijians born in New Zealand to have access to a telephone (95 percent compared with 94 percent) and to the Internet (39 percent compared with 37 percent) in the home.
