Fijian

  • In 2001, 28 percent of Fijian people (with a language) were able to hold an everyday conversation in Fijian – up from 24 percent in 1996.
  • A higher proportion of the overseas-born Fijian population was able to speak Fijian (47 percent of those with a language) than the New Zealand-born Fijian population (6 percent of those with a language).
  • The proportion of the New Zealand-born Fijian population able to speak Fijian in 2001 was unchanged from 1996 (6 percent of those with a language).

English

  • English is the most widely spoken language among the Fijian population. In 2001, 99 percent of Fijian people (with a language) were able to speak English – up from 97 percent in 1996.
