Niuean people in New Zealand
- In 2001, 85 percent of Niuean adults reported involvement in unpaid or voluntary activities in the four weeks preceding the census – either inside or outside the home. This work included household work, looking after a child or ill person, as well as working for a community group.
- The New Zealand-born Niuean population was more likely to be involved in unpaid work (87 percent) than overseas-born Niueans (84 percent).
- Niuean women were more likely than Niuean men to participate in all categories of unpaid work, as figure 7.1 illustrates.
- Household work, including cooking, repairs and gardening, is the most common category of unpaid work, as figure 7.1 shows. In 2001, 86 percent of Niuean women and 80 percent of Niuean men reported participating in these activities.
- Looking after a child in the home was the next most common category (49 percent of Niuean women and 37 percent of Niuean men), with the relatively youthful Niuean population being a contributing factor.
