About the Classification Counts

Classification counts are simple counts at the finest level of the classifications. They are provided at the national level, that is the total for all New Zealand. Where appropriate tables are also provided for the Māori ethnic group population.

The tables include the usually resident population counts plus some census night population counts.

The census night population count is all people counted in New Zealand on census night including overseas visitors but excluding New Zealand residents temporarily overseas.

The census usually resident population count is all people counted in New Zealand on census night excluding overseas visitors and New Zealand residents temporarily overseas.
