There has been a marginal decline in the average household size over the past ten years, from 2.8 people per household in 1996 to 2.7 people per household in 2006.
The proportion of one-person households has increased from 20.7 percent (256,569 households) in 1996 to 23.0 percent (328,299 households) in 2006.
As in the previous two censuses, households most commonly consisted of two people.
