2018 Census report on final content outlines decisions on the content to be included in the 2018 Census of Population and Dwellings. These are based on a comprehensive process of consultation, questionnaire development, testing, and classification development.

With little change to census content since 2001, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of content to ensure the 2018 Census reflects the information needs of our customers. As a result, we are collecting some new topics in the 2018 Census, and are making a number of changes to existing topics. The aim of these changes is to improve the relevance and quality of the information collected, while balancing the need to preserve data comparability over time.

The information provided by everyone who participated in the consultation process will help to ensure that the 2018 Census is of great value to New Zealand society and meets the information needs of users from a range of customers, including central and local government, business, iwi, community, and academic. This consultation will also provide a basis for planning and development of the 2023 Census.

Stats NZ will conduct the 2018 Census of Population and Dwellings on Tuesday, 6 March 2018.
