The Census data user guide is an easy-to-use reference for users of data from the Census of Population and Dwellings. It provides answers to some of the common questions users may have about census data. The questions relate to the processes and procedures involved in the collection and processing of census data, and its interpretation and use.

We also encourage users to refer to the following publications from the 2006 Census that are available from the Statistics New Zealand website:

• Introduction to the Census gives an overview of the census
• Definitions and Questionnaires provides definitions of, and terminology used in census outputs. It also provides copies of census forms from 1906, where they are available
• Data Dictionary provides a list of variables available from the census 
• Information by Variable provides information about each census output variable.
