We rely on your goodwill and cooperation to produce high-quality official statistics. We make sure that all the individual information that we collect remains confidential. Your details are protected by us:   

  • allowing access to anonymised data only, and then only to approved people
  • combining information from respondents so that no individual person, household or business can be identified.

We aim to release statistics that are as useful as possible, while preserving confidentiality for individual respondents.

Confidentiality requirements

Section 37 of the Statistics Act 1975 (Security of information) governs the use of individual information we collect.

This information: 

  • can only be used for statistical purposes
  • must be kept secure to prevent unauthorised access
  • must not be released where it could lead to disclosure of individuals' details.
