Find out how Statistics NZ ensures the privacy, security, and confidentiality of information we collect from individuals, households, and businesses. This includes how we use, store, and distribute our information.
Information privacy and security are central to all our activities
Almost every day of the week, Statistics NZ collects a wide and diverse range of information to produce official statistics. Much of the data we use is collected from individuals, households, and businesses, and it contains personal and commercially sensitive information.
We rely on people’s trust and goodwill to continue to supply us with quality information so we can produce the data that New Zealand needs to grow and prosper.
As data custodians, we always ensure that individuals’ privacy is protected, kept secure and confidential. It is an important part of continuing to earn and maintain the public’s trust.
Statistics NZ is committed to ensuring the privacy, security, and confidentiality of all our information. This includes the collection, use, storage, and distribution of the information we collect from individuals, households, and businesses. Information security is central to all our activities.
We work closely with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner to ensure that best practice is followed. We are open and transparent about how we adhere to the privacy, security, and confidentiality protocol that guides the Official Statistics System.
We use our expertise to advise across government about best practice in protecting data. We liaise closely with other countries’ National Statistics Offices on international best practice in security and confidentiality of information.
Our commitment
We rely on the trust and goodwill of individuals, households, and businesses to enable the collection and production of credible high-quality official statistics. We work hard to ensure that privacy, security, and confidentiality remain at the heart of all aspects of our collection, use and release of information.
We ensure:
- privacy by collecting only the information we need and using it for that purpose
- security by keeping data safe from unauthorised access and use
- confidentiality by never releasing information that could identify individuals, households or businesses.
