Cross-government collaboration strengthens international relationships

ASEAN infographic

Statistics NZ has been working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to support NZ Inc's launch of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) strategy in Auckland on 12 July.

Statistics NZ helped to produce an infographic using its 2007-12 trade, migration, and investment data to assist in highlighting New Zealand's growing interactions with the region. MFAT will use the information to show to a targeted business audience, as well as using it to raise the general awareness of the region with the public.

MFAT used the infographic at the launch event, and will be using it further during a regional road show, highlighting it on the MFAT website, and traditional and online media will have the opportunity to use it too.

This example of cross government collaboration has highlighted the versatility of official statistics and how Statistics NZ's data can be used in a wide range of useful and informative ways and presented for different audience groups.

The NZ Inc strategies, of which ASEAN is one, are plans of action for strengthening New Zealand’s economic, political, and security relationships with key international partners. The strategies target countries and regions where New Zealand has existing or emerging relationships, and there is potential for significant growth. The strategies look at the future possibilities in these markets over the next 10-15 years, then set ambitious, five-year goals, as well as the steps the Government will take, often working with businesses, to achieve them.
