  • Planted production forest covered 1.9 million hectares in 2002, up 26 percent since 1994.
  • Forestry activity uses 7 percent of New Zealand's total land area.
  • The area of new plantings of production forest totalled 34,000 hectares in the December 2001 year. Replantings of production forest totalled 42,500 hectares in this period.
  • The area planted in production forest has increased by more than a quarter since 1994 as marginal farming land is converted.
