The impact of crime on public safety is an issue of enduring interest and concern.
Crime rates attest not only to the safety of our persons and our property but also to the
overall health of our society and to the effectiveness of the institutions that are
dedicated to crime prevention and the administration of justice.
Crime in New Zealand: 1996–2005 provides a descriptive overview of trends in
recorded crime in New Zealand. The report examines how the total rate of offending
and the proportion of recorded offences that are resolved have changed since 1970.
The report also describes changes in offence rates for particular types of crime
between 1996 and 2005.
Building on previous crime trend reports produced by Statistics New Zealand, this
report complements both the New Zealand Police annual crime statistics reports and
the Ministry of Justice's annual reports on conviction and sentencing of offenders.
