Indicator reports provide a summary picture about New Zealand and the things that make New Zealand the country it is. Indicators are a set of summary statistics and other information selected for a particular purpose. Government uses indicator reports as a part of the policy process, for example as part of evaluating the effectiveness of policy in relation to desired outcomes, scanning for issues existing and emerging, or prioritising.
Central government and local government produce a number of indicator reports, some regularly, and some as a one off analyses of important issues. These include overarching reports such as sustainable development reporting, reports that cover broad issues, such as society, the economy, the environment, culture and specific issues focused on a particular sector, population group or subject area, such as the health of children, or the state of a particular industry for example. Reports can also be regional and local.
