The New Zealand System of National Accounts (NZSNA) is a comprehensive accounting framework based on an international standard. The structure and content of the NZSNA transforms the bewildering mass of economic transactions occurring within the economy into a valuable information resource. The National Accounts are based on the results of a wide and varying range of surveys and censuses. The organisation and presentation of this material in a systematic form allows the behaviour and interaction of the major parts of the economy to be identified, and the impact of structural change to be understood.
This report updates in one volume all of the official accounts and series currently published within the context of the NZSNA and discusses the most significant changes introduced since the 1996 report. The report opens with an economic commentary on the major series included.
The 1991 Review of Macroeconomic Statistics made more than 50 recommendations, 44 of which related to the development or enhancement of specific macroeconomic series. The major developments in national accounts statistics to date arising from these recommendations are also discussed in this report, and progress on all of the relevant recommendations is reported on.
