The Tourism Satellite Account: 2005 report, first released on 7 September 2006, has been republished. This is due to the subsequent discovery of multiple errors since the release of the publication. The corrected version is available below.
Changes have been made to the following figures and tables:
- Figure 3 (pg 6 of the report)

- Figure 10 (pg 25)
- Table 13 (pg 23)
- Table 14 (pg 25)

The corrections above have resulted in text changes on pages 23 and 25 of the report.
In addition, the 2002 (revised) set of tables has been corrected.

Tourism Satellite Account: 2005 provides an updated analysis of the New Zealand tourism industry and is part of an ongoing programme designed to enhance understanding of the tourism industry in New Zealand.
Tourism plays a significant role in the New Zealand economy in terms of the production of goods and services and the creation of employment opportunities. Unlike 'conventional' industries such as agriculture or manufacturing, which are classified in accordance with the goods and services they produce, tourism is defined by the characteristics of the customer demanding tourism products. Therefore, tourism products cut across standard industry definitions, and alternative measurement systems are needed.
A tourism satellite account (TSA), consistent and integrated with New Zealand's official national accounts, is used to measure the economic contribution of tourism to gross domestic product (GDP) and to provide analysis of the New Zealand tourism industry. The emphasis in a TSA is on measurement of expenditure in New Zealand by resident and non-resident tourists, and on the size of the tourism industry, including its contribution to GDP and employment.
The Tourism Satellite Account: 2005 report presents tourism expenditure, tourism's impact on the New Zealand economy in terms of both direct and indirect value added, and the number of persons directly employed as a result of tourism. Results presented cover the provisional figures for 2004 and 2005 and a summary of the results for 2002 (revised) and 2003.
