New Zealand Business Demography Statistics: At February 2013

Key facts

Provisional figures at February 2013 showed:

  • There were 472,600 enterprises in New Zealand, a decrease of 0.2 percent from February 2012. 
  • Enterprise deaths continued to exceed enterprise births for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Large enterprises (100 or more employees) made up less than 1 percent of all enterprises but they had nearly half of all employees. 
  • The total number of paid employees was 1.94 million (not an official employment statistic), an increase of 0.6 percent from February 2012. 
  • The majority of industries had more employees than at February 2012.
  • There were 2,350 foreign-controlled enterprise groups that owned 3,930 New Zealand enterprises.
