The dataset used to produce these statistics excludes businesses with the characteristics listed in table 1.

 Businesses with no R&D, and with the following ANZSIC codes:

  • agriculture
  • agriculture, forestry, and fishing support services
  • textile, leather, clothing, and footwear manufacturing
  • wood product manufacturing
  • primary metal and metal product manufacturing
  • construction services
  • Internet service providers, web search portals, and data processing services.
 Large businesses  With less than 50 percent exports and more than 100 employees 
 Medium businesses  With less than 50 percent exports and 50 to 100 employees 
 Medium businesses  With less than 20 percent exports and 20 to 49 employees (except businesses with no ownership or shareholdings in an overseas business)
 
This provides a set of businesses that operate in technology intensive sectors of the economy and are export focused. These are the businesses that have been used to produce the statistics for technology intensive sectors.
