Products and services available to universities

Confidentialised unit record files

CURFs are unit record data that are modified to protect the confidentiality of respondents while maintaining the integrity of the data. You need our approval to access a CURF. In addition to New Zealand CURFs, universities can also apply for access to CURFs produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). See Responsible access to CURFs training manual on the ABS website.

Synthetic unit record files

A SURF is a synthetic microdata product which is free and publicly available. SURFs contain synthetic unit records that mimic the statistical properties of real microdata. They can be used for teaching and learning purposes or as a source of unit-record data for developing analytical methods or statistical processes. The New Zealand Income Survey Super SURF is a set of 100 SURFs that are based on data from the New Zealand Income Survey: June 2003 quarter. Each SURF contains around 11,000 records and a mixture of numerical and categorical variables. More SURFs are in the Schools Corner section of the Statistics NZ website.

Statistical data packages

Users can undertake a detailed examination of the social, demographic, and economic elements of New Zealand’s population using these packages. Detailed variables have been cross-tabulated by a number of supplementary variables.

Available statistical data packages:

Changes to Auckland’s local government structure, which came into effect on 1 November 2010, affect these data packages. Packages currently available are based on the former structure, and at this stage there are no plans to update them to reflect the changes. For information on how Statistics New Zealand is managing data affected by the council restructure, please see Statistics for Auckland Council or call our Information Centre on 0508 525 525.

Customised data

Universities each have a set allocation of hours for customised data that is available to individuals for specific research purposes. This applies to all datasets produced by Statistics NZ for which customised tables can be prepared.

There will be no charge for outputs that have been previously requested via CONZUL contract.

Some of the subject areas where customised data tables have been produced in the past are:

  • Census of Population and Dwellings
  • Household Economic Survey
  • International Travel and Migration
  • Overseas Trade
  • Retail Trade Survey

Please submit your request for customised data to your university contact officer. As for the data packages, changes to Auckland’s local government structure, which came into effect on 1 November 2010, may affect customised data. For information on how Statistics NZ is managing data affected by the council restructure, please see Statistics for Auckland Council or call our Information Centre on 0508 525 525.
