New weighting methodology in longitudinal surveys: As applied in the Survey of Family, Income and Employment

New weighting methodology in longitudinal surveys: As applied in the Survey of Family, Income and Employment presents a weighting and calibration methodology developed to overcome complications in determining if longitudinal respondents were in or out of scope in Statistics New Zealand's Survey of Family, Income and Employment (SoFIE). People were out of scope if they had permanently moved overseas, into institutions such as boarding houses, hotels, motels, monasteries, and prisons, or had died over the eight years in which the survey was conducted. Due to issues tracking these people, we were unable to use these survey members to represent the population who were out of scope. Instead we had to create a methodology to describe the in scope population directly. This report is useful to those creating weights for other longitudinal surveys, and for those who wish to understand more about the process behind the creation of the weights in the SoFIE processing system. We have included a glossary of technical terms and some suggestions of further reading for those less familiar with SoFIE.
