Christchurch Retail Trade Indicator: September 2015 quarter
Embargoed until 10:45am  –  22 December 2015
Key facts

For the September 2015 quarter, compared with the June 2015 quarter, seasonally adjusted figures show that in Christchurch city:

  • Total retail and hospitality sales rose 2.4 percent (nationally, sales rose 1.4 percent).
  • Retail sales rose 2.8 percent.
  • Hospitality sales were unchanged.

Total retail and hospitality growth was similar for Christchurch and New Zealand before the earthquakes, but diverged markedly between the June 2010 and September 2012 quarters.

The graph shows that from early 2013, continued growth in the Christchurch series has maintained its gap ahead of the national growth level, with a further surge in sales over recent quarters.

Graph showing quarterly index numbers, retail and hospitality, seasonally adjusted sales, September 2007 to September 2015 quarters.
