Vehicles lift April retail sales

Highlights

For April 2009 compared with March 2009 (on a seasonally adjusted basis):

  • total retail sales rose 0.5 percent ($27 million)
  • core retail sales fell 0.1 percent ($4 million)
  • the biggest increases were in motor vehicle retailing and department stores
  • the biggest decrease was in the other retailing industry.
  • The total retail sales trend has been falling since January 2008 but has flattened in the last three months.
