Key facts

For June 2017 compared with June 2016:

  • National guest nights were up 146,000 (6.7 percent) to 2,309,000.
  • Domestic guest nights were up 35,000 (2.6 percent) to 1,412,000.
  • International guest nights were up 111,000 (14.1 percent) to 898,000.

Guest nights increased for all four accommodation types:

  • hotels – up 51,000 (5.8 percent) to 933,000
  • motels – up 56,000 (8.1 percent) to 755,000
  • backpackers – up 8,000 (2.5 percent) to 314,000
  • holiday parks – up 31,000 (11.1 percent) to 306,000.

Guest nights were up in 11 of the 12 regional areas. The largest increases were in:

  • Canterbury, up 23,000 (8.8 percent) to 289,000
  • Wellington, up 21,000 (10.1 percent) to 230,000
  • Otago, up 20,000 (6.3 percent) to 340,000.

The West Coast had the only decrease, down 1,000 (2.6 percent) to 50,000.

Seasonally adjusted guest nights rose 6.9 percent in June 2017 compared with May 2017, following a 2.2 percent fall in May. The trend continued to increase, and is at its highest-ever level.

For the year ended June 2017, there were 38,958,000 guest nights, an increase of 1,393,000 (3.7 percent) from the previous June year.
