Goods and Services Trade by Country: Year ended June 2017

Key facts
  • New Zealand's total trade balance was a surplus of $3.1 billion in the year ended June 2017.
  • Total exports of goods and services were $71.8 billion, while total imports were $68.7 billion.
  • The top export destination was China ($13.2 billion), followed by Australia ($13.0 billion).
  • The European Union ($11.9 billion) and Australia ($11.4 billion) were our main import sources.
  • Dairy products and logs to China were New Zealand's top two export commodities by destination in the June 2017 year, earning $3.3 billion and $2.1 billion, respectively.
  • Vehicles, parts, and accessories from Japan ($2.3 billion) and the European Union ($2.2 billion); and electrical machinery and equipment from China ($2.0 billion), were our three largest import expenses.
