Wholesale Trade Survey: June 2017 quarter

Higher sales in five wholesale industries

Five of the six wholesale industries had higher sales in the June 2017 quarter. The movements were:
  • basic materials – up 3.4 percent ($179 million)
  • machinery and equipment – up 3.7 percent ($178 million) 
  • motor vehicle and motor-vehicle parts – up 4.8 percent ($124 million)
  • grocery, liquor, and tobacco products – up 1.0 percent ($76 million)
  • commission-based – up 4.7 percent ($20 million) 
  • other goods (including textile, pharmaceutical goods and furniture) – down 3.4 percent ($134 million).

Stock values rise

Stock figures are not adjusted for seasonal effects unless otherwise specified.

The total value of wholesale trade stocks held at 30 June 2017 was $11.2 billion, up 6.7 percent ($704 million) when compared with 30 June 2016.

Stocks rose from the June 2016 quarter in all of the six wholesale industries. The movements were:

  • motor vehicle and motor-vehicle parts – up 19 percent ($328 million)
  • grocery, liquor, and tobacco products – up 7.6 percent ($131 million)
  • machinery and equipment – up 4.4 percent ($121 million)
  • basic materials – up 4.7 percent ($86 million)
  • other goods (including textile, pharmaceutical goods and furniture) – up 1.3 percent ($33 million)
  • commission-based – up 16 percent ($4.9 million). 

When adjusted for seasonal effects, total wholesale trade stocks were worth $11.3 billion at 30 June 2017, up 2.9 percent ($314 million) from 31 March 2017.
