Survey of English Language Providers: Year ended March 2007  –  Media Release

Expenditure by international students studying at English language schools was $233 million in the year ended March 2007, Statistics New Zealand said today. This was $9 million higher than for the year ended March 2006.

The Census of English Language Providers collects information on international students’ spending on tuition and related fees at New Zealand English language schools. The survey also collects data on students’ accommodation expenditure, where this is arranged by the school, as well as student numbers and the number of weeks they studied for.

According to the Census of English Language Providers, there were 35,166 international students enrolled at English language schools in New Zealand in the year ended March 2007. Tuition and related expenditure by these students earned schools $116 million during this period.

Compared with the year ended March 2006, student numbers were down 384 (1.1 percent) for the year ended March 2007. The largest fall was in the number of Chinese students, whose numbers have been decreasing since the March 2003 year. There were 23,179 (84.0 percent) fewer Chinese students at English language schools in New Zealand for the year ended March 2007 compared with the year ended March 2003.

Tuition and related fees earned by English language schools in New Zealand increased $5 million between the March 2006 year and the March 2007 year. This followed a decrease of $43 million in the previous March year. Total tuition expenditure by all international students at New Zealand English language schools was 54.9 percent lower for the March 2007 year, compared with the March 2003 year.

The estimated total value of expenditure by all international students studying in New Zealand was $1,242 million for the year ended March 2007, down $48 million from the previous year. Total expenditure by all international students includes the expenditure by students measured by the Census of English Language Providers, as well as the expenditure of students enrolled at primary and secondary schools, and studying for formal tertiary qualifications.
