The recent upturn in the number of births has raised interest in the measurement of fertility in New Zealand and the impact of fertility on future population size. This article describes a range of fertility measures and discusses the limitations of these measures.
The number of births depends on the number and age of women in the population, how many babies women have, and when they have them. But just how to measure this accurately now and in the future can present some challenges.
