The New Zealand Childcare Survey 2009: A survey of the care and educational arrangements of children is collecting information about the types of childcare arrangements (e.g., early childhood education, out-of-school services) people use to care for their children, the costs associated with these arrangements, and the difficulties people face balancing work and childcare responsibilities.
The official Childcare Survey 2009 will be run as a supplement to the Household Labour Force Survey, and the interviews will be conducted from July to September 2009.
What questions are being asked?
Only one person in the household will be asked about:
- The types of childcare arrangements people use (e.g., Kindergarten, Kohanga Reo, grandparents)
- How much childcare costs for one child in the family
- If any government subsidies are used to assist with childcare
- Difficulties getting childcare
- Reasons for not using certain types of childcare
- Use of workplace provisions and work arrangements made to assist with childcare responsibilities
- The use of childcare during the school holidays
- Barriers to accessing childcare which affect participation in paid employment, education and studying/training
How will the information from the Childcare Survey 2009 be used?
This information will be used by academics, researchers, the Government and employers in New Zealand to gain a better understanding of:
- Early Childhood Education (ECE) and childcare use for preschool children aged 0-5 years.
- Out of school services (OSS) used for school aged children aged 5-13 years, including school holiday programmes.
- The use of government subsidies, and barriers to childcare arrangements.
- Whether a lack of childcare arrangements prevented parents from participating in employment, and study/training.
- Use of workplace provisions and work arrangements made, to assist with childcare responsibilities.
