QuickStats About a Place are overviews of territorial authorities and regions covering demographics, dwellings, households, transport, etc.
The 2006 Meshblock Dataset contains counts starting at the meshblock level for selected variables from the 2006, 2001, and 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, rebased to 2006 Census boundaries. These counts are at the highest level of each variable’s classification. The dataset also contains counts for area units, wards, territorial authorities, and regional councils.
The Regional Stocktake is a list of sub-nationally available central government datasets and supporting information. It should be used as a first port of call for any potential user of subnational information, from local and central government to independent researchers.
Reports and articles
Mapping trends in the Auckland region presents background data to help inform the debate. It looks at some fundamental social, demographic, and economic trends affecting people in the Auckland region. It focuses particularly on geographical patterns, and how these are changing over time. The data come from population censuses and projections, and cover the period 1991 to 2031. The results are presented mainly through maps and graphs.
Local population trends – an Excel file that contains graphs, tables and supporting notes which illustrate past and likely future trends in population size, population age structure, births, deaths, and net migration for each territorial authority and regional council area, as well as for New Zealand as a whole.
Commuting Patterns in New Zealand: 1996–2006 is a statistical overview of commuting patterns in New Zealand between 1996 and 2006, focusing on Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch cities.
New Zealand: An Urban/Rural Profile update is a further development that builds on a Statistics New Zealand research report published in 2004, New Zealand: An Urban/Rural Profile. This update reviews the experimental classification used in the initial report, using the later 2006 Census information, and produces a greater timeseries view on this important segmentation of living in New Zealand.
