In April 2017 compared with April 2016 visitor arrivals were up 55,200 to 311,900.

The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (up 26,800)
  • United States (up 7,600)
  • United Kingdom (up 5,100)
  • China (down 4,100).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 26,400 to 244,200.

The biggest changes were in departures to:

  • Australia (up 6,600)
  • United States (up 2,900)
  • Thailand (up 1,700).

Permanent and long-term arrivals were up 300 to 8,600.

Permanent and long-term departures were up 300 to 5,200.

In April 2017, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 5,800 migrants.

In the April 2017 year compared with the April 2016 year:

  • visitor arrivals numbered 3.6 million, up 324,600 (10 percent)
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.7 million trips overseas, up 257,200 (11 percent)
  • permanent and long-term arrivals were 129,800, up 5,100 (4 percent)
  • permanent and long-term departures were 57,900, up 1,300 (2 percent)
  • the net gain in migrants was 71,900.
