In January 2017 compared with January 2016 visitor arrivals were up 37,600 to 381,100.

The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • China (up 13,200)
  • United States (up 5,200)
  • Australia (up 5,200).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 20,000 to 165,700.

The biggest changes were in departures to:

  • Australia (up 3,600)
  • China (up 2,300)
  • United States (up 2,000).

Permanent and long-term arrivals were up 1,000 to 14,500.

Permanent and long-term departures were up 300 to 6,000.

In January 2017, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 6,500 migrants.

In the January 2017 year compared with the January 2016 year:

  • visitor arrivals numbered 3.54 million, up 364,600 (11 percent)
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.64 million trips overseas, up 214,400 (9 percent)
  • permanent and long-term arrivals were 128,300, up 5,300 (4 percent)
  • permanent and long-term departures were 57,000, down 100 (0 percent)
  • net gain in migrants was 71,300.
