Social and environmental factors move people
Highlights
Social motivations were the main reasons for people moving to their current usual residence (21.7 percent of movers), closely followed by environmental reasons (21.1 percent).
Almost one third of movers within New Zealand moved from their previous usual residence for economic reasons (32.0 percent). Purchase or construction of a house was the most common economic reason.
Nearly half of those who moved at least once within New Zealand since March 2005 were aged under 30 years (45.1 percent).
85.7 percent of movers rated their current overall living conditions as better or much better than before they moved.
Three out of 10 people (29.5 percent) living in the Canterbury region have moved within New Zealand since March 2005, the highest for any region.
