People of European ethnicities make up 65 percent of the New Zealand population, but this varies by region and area type. The pattern of home ownership for the European ethnic group is consequently similar to the pattern for the whole population in South Island regions, but differs for the North Island regions with lower proportions of European population. Overall, 74 percent of European non-movers and 46 percent of European movers were home owners. This is 4 percent and 3 percent higher respectively than the national average. However, for Auckland region, non-movers of European ethnicities, at 71 percent, and movers, at 45 percent, are 8 percent and 5 percent higher respectively than the national average for this region.

Home owners account for almost 90 percent of people of European ethnicities aged 50 years and over. Among movers in these age groups, home ownership rates are also fairly high at around 70 percent.
