People of Pacific ethnicities who have remained at their current address for more than five years are much more likely to own their homes than people who moved. However, only 30 percent of Pacific non-movers and 16 percent of Pacific movers own their own homes. This low percentage is the result of the majority of the Pacific population living in Auckland, where housing is less affordable.
For both movers and non-movers, affordability is a factor. Home ownership is lowest in the Auckland region at 28 percent of non-movers and 15 percent of movers. Similarly, main urban areas, which have higher proportions of rental accommodation, have lower levels of ownership than the smaller urban areas and rural areas.
There are variations by region. For example, as with Māori, Canterbury region has higher home ownership among Pacific movers than Otago region, but among Pacific non-movers Otago is ahead of Canterbury.
