Births and Deaths: Year ended June 2011

In the June 2011 year:

• 62,660 live births and 29,320 deaths were registered in New Zealand, resulting in a natural increase (live births minus deaths) of 33,330.

• There were 1,460 fewer births and 480 more deaths compared with the June 2010 year.

• The total fertility rate was 2.1 births per woman.

• The infant mortality rate was 4.90 per 1,000 live births.

According to the 2008–2010 abridged period life tables:

• Life expectancy at birth was 82.7 for females and 78.8 years for males.
