Life expectancy in New Zealand continues to increase
Key facts
In the June 2011 year:
62,660 live births and 29,320 deaths were registered in New Zealand, resulting in a natural increase (live births minus deaths) of 33,330.
There were 1,460 fewer births and 480 more deaths compared with the June 2010 year.
The total fertility rate was 2.1 births per woman.
The infant mortality rate was 4.90 per 1,000 live births.
According to the 2008–2010 abridged period life tables:
Life expectancy at birth was 82.7 for females and 78.8 years for males.
