Late birth registrations

From July 2004 to December 2009, about 4,300 live births were registered in New Zealand more than two years after the baby was born. Such registrations are known as ‘late’ registrations. This article examines the characteristics of births registered late in the period July 2004–December 2009 and provides some historical background on late registration in New Zealand. The implications of late registrations for population statistics are also briefly discussed.
