Half Local Authority Areas to Have Fewer People
Highlights
The following highlights are based on the medium series for each area:
Two-thirds of New Zealand's population growth between 2001 and 2026 is projected to be in Auckland region.
Auckland region will be home to 37 percent of New Zealand's population in 2026
, compared with 31 percent in 2001.
Almost half of New Zealand's 74 territorial authorities will have fewer residents in 2026
than in 2001.
All territorial authorities are projected to experience less natural increase (births minus deaths) by 2026.
Queenstown-Lakes District is projected to have the highest growth rate of all territorial authorities
, up 79 percent between 2001 and 2026.
All territorial authorities will be home to more people aged 65 years and over in 2026
, when compared with 2001.
