Subnational Population Projections: 2006 (base) – 2031

Highlights

 Under all projection series:

  • Population growth is projected to slow in all 16 regions between 2006 and 2031.
  • All regions, cities and districts will be home to more people aged 65 years and over in 2031.

 Under the medium series:

  • Deaths will outnumber births in one-third of territorial authority areas by 2031.
  • Almost half of New Zealand's 73 territorial authority areas will have fewer residents in 2031 than in 2006.
  • Sixty-two percent of New Zealand's population growth between 2006 and 2031 will be in Auckland region.
