Demographic Trends is Statistics New Zealand’s main reference volume on population and related statistics. It is released annually, and provides commentaries on major demographic indicators of the New Zealand population. The topics covered are: population change and structure, births, marriage, divorce, deaths, life expectancy, international travel and migration, subnational population estimates, and national and subnational demographic projections.

Unlike previous editions, Demographic Trends: 2010 does not contain a chapter on induced abortion statistics. Abortion statistics can be accessed from Infoshare (under the Health category), the annual Information Release (released in June), and the annual Abortion Supervisory Committee report (released in October).

Other changes to tables included in Demographic Trends: 2010 reflect that more data is now freely available through Statistics NZ tools such as Infoshare (under the Population and Tourism categories) and Table Builder.
