Christmas travel 2008

Introduction

The Christmas period (the two weeks up to Christmas Day, and the following three days), is the busiest time of the year for overseas visitor arrivals to New Zealand. It is also one of the busiest periods for New Zealand residents departing on short trips overseas. The characteristics of the two groups of travellers, particularly their reasons for travel, differ markedly from those travelling during the rest of the year. The aim of this article is to examine some of the characteristics of the Christmas travellers in 2008, and also to compare them with travellers arriving or departing during the other 349 days of the year.
