Non-response for international travel and migration variables

Introduction

Statistics New Zealand releases a wide range of variables relating to international travel and migration. This information comes from the arrival and departure cards completed by travellers crossing New Zealand’s borders, and electronic records provided by the New Zealand Customs Service (NZCS). While the electronic records from NZCS provide complete information for personal variables such as citizenship, sex and age (date of birth), the information provided on the cards by individual travellers is not always complete. The result is that the variables derived from travellers’ information have varying levels of non-response, as shown in table 1.
