Short-term overseas visitors from the People's Republic of China

Introduction

China is one of the top five source countries of short-term overseas visitors to New Zealand and its contribution to visitor arrival numbers is growing. In the year ended December 2007 there were a total of 120,800 visitors from China, representing a 14 percent increase over the 105,700 visitors in the previous December year. Apart from the Asian financial crisis temporarily interrupting growth in 1998 and a drop in arrival numbers following the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, there has been a rapid increase of visitors from China since the late 1990s.
