Help using GDP visualisation

Explore the graphs in the gross domestic product (GDP) visualisation to see quarterly changes in the production of the different industries making up New Zealand's economy. The graphs also show the relative importance of these industries in GDP.

On a laptop or desktop computer

The bar graph shows the quarterly percentage change of the selected GDP industry. Hover over a bar for more detail, and click to select a different time period.

The pie chart shows the percentage change between the time periods selected on the slider bar at the bottom of the web page. The longer (or shorter) the slice, the larger (smaller) the percentage increase (decrease). The wider the slice, the more important that subcategory is to the overall economy (slice's angle = GDP weight).

Click on a slice to display its subcategories, or click on the white area surrounding the pie chart to back up a level. Click the zoom out button to go back to total GDP. The subcategories in the visualisation are the 3 industry aggregates, 16 high-level industry groups, and 32 industry groups.

Use the slider bar to change time periods. Do this by either clicking on a time period or dragging one of the time period flags across.

About the weights

The weights shown in the visualisation relate to the earlier of the two time periods on the slider bar. Volume measures of GDP are reweighted annually, based on annual benchmarks from National Accounts (Industry Benchmarks).

See Quarterly gross domestic product: Sources and methods (third edition), chapter 3, for more information on incorporating annual benchmarks.

About unallocated taxes

This category includes GST, import duties and stamp duty. These items are included in the production measure of GDP to maintain consistency with the other measures of GDP, but aren't allocated to specific industries
