Information about the state of New Zealanders' health is collected in the New Zealand Health Survey (NZHS). This survey was first conducted in 1996/97 by Statistics New Zealand on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health now runs the survey around every 3 years.
The NZHS collects information on the prevalence of chronic diseases, the prevalence of health risk and protective factors, the use of a wide range of health services, and self-reported health status. It is a sample survey of adult New Zealanders living in private dwellings.
