Population

These datasets about population provide information about people, communities, life events that affect population, and about the dwellings and households, locations and environments that people live in.

 

Measures of population and dwellings

The Census of population and dwellings dataset provides an extensive range of actual counts of population by various characteristics (eg, age, ethnicity), and of dwellings. The census is taken every five years, most recently in 2001.

The Population estimates dataset records annual estimates of population made in years between censuses.

The Population projections dataset contains the latest projections of population, ethnic populations, families, households and labour force.


The Dwelling and household estimates dataset contains quarterly estimates of private dwellings and households in New Zealand.

 

Vital statistics

The Births dataset records all births notified and registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Birth notifications are recorded quarterly and registrations are counted annually.

The Deaths dataset records all deaths notified to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages each year.

The Marriages dataset records all legal marriages registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages each year.

The Civil Unions dataset records all civil unions registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages each year.

The Divorces dataset records all dissolutions of marriages completed in the Family Court each year.

The Cohort life tables dataset contains estimates of life expectancy and death rates at various ages from cohort life tables.

The Period life tables dataset contains estimates of life expectancy and death rates at various ages from period life tables.
 

Older people

The Older people dataset records data from a one-off 2000 survey of older people and their living conditions.

Migration

The Dynamics and Motivations of Migration dataset provides data on the reasons for internal migration and provides insights into demographic characteristics of people who have moved or not moved, as well as satisfaction ratings for living conditions.

The Immigration dataset records the settlement experiences of new migrants to New Zealand, collected by the Longitudinal immigration survey: New Zealand.

The International travel and migration dataset records numbers and characteristics of arrivals to and departures from New Zealand, including overseas visitors, New Zealand resident travellers and permanent and long-term migrants (immigrants and emigrants).
