The Census of Population and Dwellings provides a five-yearly snapshot of the New Zealand population at that time. Population information from the census includes counts of total population and usually resident population by characteristics like age, sex, ethnicity, and location.
The census also collects information about where people live, producing counts of all dwellings, occupied and unoccupied, private and non-private dwellings. Details available about dwellings include location, size, and household composition.
All people present in New Zealand on census night are legally required to answer the census.
