Core Questions Module

The core questions module is a set of questions that are aimed at gathering key demographic variables such as age, sex, and ethnicity consistently across social surveys.

The module will increase the quality, coherence and comparability of core survey data.  It will also enable us to meet user needs more efficiently.

In the future, the core questions module may also be used as a part of a wider Household Survey Strategy to:

  • produce inter-censual population estimates
  • provide information for benchmarks for calibration estimation
  • provide subsamples of populations of interest.

The development work for the core questions module is being done as part of the project to develop the General Social Survey (GSS). The core questions module is currently in development and will first be used in April 2008 as part of the GSS.

Following a review of its use in the GSS, the core questions module may be progressively included in each of our household surveys as new surveys are developed.
