External migration statistics refer to short-term and long-term movements of overseas and New Zealand travellers into and out of New Zealand. The information is obtained from the New Zealand passenger arrival and departure cards, and is available on a monthly basis.
Short-term movements (duration of less than one year) show the level of inbound and outbound tourism by source and destination countries, travel purpose (holiday, visiting friends and relatives, business, education/medical, conference) and duration of travel.
Statistics on long-term or permanent movements (duration of one year or more) indicate the number of immigrants and emigrants, including their net effect on our population, and the characteristics of migrants (age, sex, nationality, birthplace, occupation, source and destination countries).
Internal migration statistics refer to the movements of people within New Zealand. Such statistics are valuable for analysing urban-rural, inter-regional and intra-regional population movements. Information on internal migration is obtained from the Census of Population and Dwellings, and includes the characteristics of those moving.
Provisional four-weekly visitor arrivals - Statistics New Zealand has been monitoring total visitor arrivals, and visitors from the top 10 source countries, on a four-weekly basis. The monitoring has now been extended to New Zealand resident departures. The aim of this monitoring is to gain an early indication of the possible change in monthly visitor and New Zealand resident departure numbers compared with the previous year.
Tourism, International Visitor Arrivals - You can subscribe to this monthly publication which provides information on visitor arrivals by purpose of travel, time spent in New Zealand, country of origin, age and sex of travellers, and port of arrival.
Tourism and Migration 2003 is a recently released annual update of a number of the tables contained in the Tourism and Migration 2000 reference report. The update contains statistics on a December year basis up to 2003 on a range of topics, but does not include commentary or analysis.
