Biotechnology

Biotechnology as defined by the OECD, is the application of science and technology to living organisms as well as parts, products and models thereof, to alter living or non-living materials for the production of knowledge, goods and services.

The biotechnology sector can be associated with innovative activities, and innovation has been cited as a key factor in sustaining economic growth, and in developing a more flexible New Zealand economy capable of competing successfully on the international stage. This sector is seen as important, due to its high growth potential, and its ability to contribute technologies and services across the economy.
