Rationale

The weekly rent paid variable is collected and used in formulating residual income, rent equivalence for owner occupied housing, and gross output for residential rental activity. It is also used in the formulation and monitoring of housing policy by central and local government.

Classification of weekly rent paid by households

The standard classification of weekly rent paid by households is a flat classification of dollar categories from $1 weekly rent paid to $9,000. Also categories for over $9,000, no rent paid and residual categories. Excluding residual categories there are 9,002 categories. The residual categories are defined in Glossary and references.
